TEHRAN - The Eurowings airliner will initiate a once-weekly service to Tehran from Cologne Bonn airport on March 29, 2016, increasing to twice-weekly on May 6.
The route will initially operate on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and then, also extends to Fridays and Saturdays. The airline will roaster an A330 on to the route. The German Eurowings, formerly Germanwings, is a German low-cost airline based in Düsseldorf and a fully owned subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group. Its main bases are Düsseldorf Airport and Hamburg Airport.
The decision comes about close on the heels of the nuclear pact clinched between Iran and world powers on July 14 in Vienna.
However, Eurowings is a latecomer to the scene relative to other airlines such as Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines.
Previously, Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines announced that they will expand their flight service to Tehran.
Mohammad Khodakarami, the deputy director of Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization (CAO), had said in April that some well-known European airlines have announced readiness to establish new flight routes or increase weekly flights to Iran.
